What not to feed your cat

Cats naturally like to get a piece of your food for themselves but do you know you can be risking serious harm to your cat? Some of the things we (people) eat and take for granted can be a deadly poison to your cat. I do not encourage the habit of feeding cats people food at any time but at times I still find myself feeding my cat some thing. Care in this should always be taken because if its in the wrong setting you will train your cat to have bad habits. If you are going to feed a cat some scraps then always place it in the cats normal feeding dish and never feed directly form the table. feeding directly form the table can lead to problems of begging while you try to eat your meals.

The major types of people food that are highly toxic to cats are:

Chocolate
Chocolate is very toxic to both cats and dogs. Chocolate contains Theobromine. Theobromine effects your cats Central Nervous System as a stimulant, Cardiovascular stimulant, Increase blood pressure and causes vomiting. Although this poisoning is rarely fatal your cat can have an extreme reaction.

Onions, Garlic, & Related Root Vegetables
Onions contain N-propyl disulphide. This substance destroys red blood cells in the cats. This will cause a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia. Garlic, leeks and chive greens contains a similar substances in a lower amounts than onions.

Tomatoes, Raw Potatoes
These foods contain Glycoalkaloid Solanine. This substance is a bitter, poisonous alkaloid that causes violent lower gastrointestinal symptoms. Reports of a cat which came close to death from eating only one cherry tomato can be found at http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/tomato.php.

Grapes and Raisins
While these foods are mainly identified as dangerous for dogs, they can also be harmful to cats. The ASPCA advises: "As there are still many unknowns with the toxic potential of grapes and raisins, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises not giving grapes or raisins to pets in any amount." With that in mind I have them on my do not feed to kitty list as well.

Milk
While milk is not toxic to cats, it often has undesirable effects. Many cats are lactose-intolerant. Lactose intolerant cats suffer from not being able to digest the lactose in milk and milk products. The result is stomach upset, cramps, and gas.

These are the most common "people foods" that are potentially dangerous to cats. The best solution is to feed your cat nutritious specifically designed Cat food and choose specially designed cat treats instead of table scraps.
